Summary The trunk wood of Aniba kappleri Mez (family Lauraceae) contains besides sitosterol, octacosanoic acid and rhamnocitrin (7-O-methylkaempferol), three esters, namely benzyl benzoate, benzyl 2-hydroxybenzoate and benzyl 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate, and two α-pyrones, namely 4-methoxy-6- (E) -(3',4'-methy!enedioxystyryl)-2-pyrone and 4-methoxy-6-{E)-(3',4'-dimethoxystyryl]-2pyrone. A dimer of the latter compound, which was obtained additionally, is considered to be an artifact. |

Since the early 1930's, congress has established a number of programs intended to soften the impact of economic forces upon farmers. These programs seek to adjust production to utilization on a year-to-year basis by offering incentives to producers to expand or contract their crop planting. As a result, accurate estimates of producer response to changing market prices and government programs are very important for policy makers as they attempt to adjust programs to balance demand and supply. Good forecasts of future crop acreages can also help economists provide producers and agribusinesses with better guides for strategies and planning, marketing, and production decisions. The objective of this study is to forecast acreage planted for a specific... |

A land bid-price model is formulated which integrates asset pricing models form prior studies to illustrate the singular and joint effects of ordinary and capital gains taxes, growth of returns, diseconomies of size, and risk behavior on farmland prices. An application of the model to primary data from cash grains farms illustrates that the ceteris paribus effect of increased marginal tax rates on a perpetual, growing income stream is to increase its present value. Larger farms in higher marginal tax brackets are shown to have a competitive advantage over smaller, lower tax bracket farms. |

Previously published data and preliminary indications from research now in progress suggest the possible occurrence in offshore Nigeria of economically viable deposits of placer minerals (including heavy minerals), sand and gravel, phosphorite, glauconite, polymetalic manganese nodules etc. In addition, new stratigraphic evidence indicates the existence of potentially rich petroleum plays associated with a Tertiary canyon system in water depths beyond the limits of present exploitation. Based on the comparative geology of similar occurrences in better explored continental margins and ocean basins elsewhere, the possible origin, abundance and distribution of these resources are adduced. A brief assessment of the technology relevant to their discovery and... |

Sericolea is a genus endemic to New Guinea. The relevant literature is surveyed. Descriptions are given of all species and keys provided to the 15 species and all infraspecific taxa accepted. Two species are described as new: S. coodei and S. microphylla. A new subspecies of S. brassii A. C. Sm. is recognized: ssp. carrii. S. arfakensis Gibbs, S. gracilis (Laut.) Schltr., and S. novoguineensis Gibbs reduced by Coode in a recent paper are reinstated and S. glabra Schltr.. also reduced by Coode, is recognized as a variety of S. micans Schltr. Three new varieties are distinguished in S. gaultheria (F. v. M.) Schltr. and one in S. novoguineensis Gibbs. |

The author refers 35 valid species to the genus Sarcophyton. The holotypes of nearly all species could be examined; of only three species (S. elegans, S. glaucum, and S. latum) their depository is unknown. The holotypes of eight species were described earlier by the present author, in four cases in co-operation with other authors; the reader is referred to the literature given in the list of valid species. Among the species described in the present paper there is a new one: S. buitendijki. A list of invalid taxa is added. Four keys may help with the identification of the corals. |

Twelve species are recognized of which five (P. womersleyi, P. brassii, P. hooglandii, P. schoddei. and P. clemensae) are described as new. Nine species are reduced to synonymy (P. warburgii, P. puberula, P. myriantha, P. paniculata, P. parvifolia, P. acuminata, P. habbamensis, P. pulchra and P. dallmannensis). All twelve species occur in New Guinea, only one (P. arfakiana) extending westwards into Sulawesi. P. incana, P. gracilis and P. hypargyrea may also occur in Queensland in addition to the three species already described from Australia. |
